Accurate erasing on a SMART Board

Active alignment tool
The active alignment tool in SMART Notebook Software lets a teacher align objects up accurately to horizontal and vertical page centers on a Notebook software page, as well as to other objects on the page.
The Administrator Toolkit in SMART Notebook Software helps teachers with administrative tasks. It includes tools such as the Install Manager, which is used for installing SMART Notebook Software on computers that are networked and the Asset Manager tool which is used monitoring the maintenance and performance of projectors and Smartboards.

SMART Notebook software features animation tools which allow teachers to animate objects on Notebook software pages to make them appear from the left or right side of the page, or fade in or out of view.

A SMART Board interactive whiteboard can be connected up to a computer using an optional wireless Bluetooth connection to reduce the number of cables needed in the SMART Board interactive whiteboard system.
Bridgit conferencing software
Bridgit conferencing software is a software package developed by SMART Technologies to allow teachers to share audio files, video files and other data over an Internet connection, quickly, easy and effectively. Bridgit conferencing software is especially useful in distance learning applications.

Digital Vision Touch Technology
Digital Vision Touch Technology (or DViT technology) is a proprietary technology from SMART Technologies that uses special digital cameras and software to detect fingers or SMART pen tools touching a flat screen display, sending this signal to the computer which translates it into mouse actions or pen tool activity. This enables the flat screen display to be used as an interactive whiteboard system.
Distance learning with a SMART Board

A document camera is an interactive learning tool that can be used with a SMART Board interactive whiteboard to display text book pages, photographs and even three dimensional objects on the SMART Board screen.

eInstruction interactive whiteboards are a type of interactive whiteboard that uses electromagnetic technology to allow a teacher to control their computer using a special electronic interactive whiteboard pen.

Export class notes
SMART Notebook Software has a feature which allows a teacher using a SMART Board interactive whiteboard to export the notes they have made on the Smartboard during the lesson to a PDF file, which can then be easily distributed to students in electronic or print format.
Eye dropper tool
The eye dropper tool in SMART Notebook Software allows a teacher to select a color from the computer’s color selection swatch to use to fill objects in Notebook software or color in outlines.
Fill color tool
The fill color tool in SMART Notebook Software lets a teacher fill an object in Notebook Software with the color of digital ink used previously.
Fill effects tool
The fill effects tool in SMART Notebook Software lets a teacher fill an object in Notebook Software with different types of effects such as patterns and gradients.
Finger control of a SMART Board
Since a SMART Board interactive whiteboard uses resistive technology rather than electromagnetic technology, it can be controlled using a finger or palm, or a pen from the SMART pen tray.
Floating mouse cursor
A floating mouse cursor can be activated in SMART Notebook Software by adding the Floating Mouse button to the SMART Floating Tools then clicking on this button. This feature allows teachers to move their fingers across the SMART Board display surface without clicking on anything, which is useful for using the mouse cursor to see tool tips.
The SMART Notebook software floating tools appear when a pen is picked up from the SMART Pen tray.
Full screen mode
If a teacher needs more room to work on their SMART Board screen surface, full screen mode in SMART Notebook software makes the tool bar and tabs disappear to make more space.
The SMART Notebook Software Gallery contains a huge variety of multimedia resources which teachers can use in their lessons presented on a SMART Board interactive whiteboard. These multimedia SMART Board resources include video files, flash files, image files and audio files, as well as different objects and maps which can all be used to enrich interactive SMART Notebook lesson files.
Games on a SMART Board
A SMART Board interactive whiteboard can be used for fun games as well as interactive lessons, and its touch screen surface makes it perfect for making board games interactive.
Handwriting recognition tool
The handwriting recognition tool in SMART Notebook Software allows teachers and students to write on the SMART Board in digital ink in their own handwriting, and then have this handwriting converted automatically to computerized text.
Height-adjustable wall mount for SMART Boards
The height adjustable wall mount for SMART Board interactive whiteboards is perfect for enabling students of different ages and heights to use the SMART Board effectively.
The highlighter tool in SMART Notebook Software lets a teacher layer highlighter ink over text. This highlighter ink is semi transparent and forms a straight line automatically.
Hitachi interactive whiteboards
Hitachi makes an interactive whiteboard called the StarBoard which is available in models that can be controlled with fingers and pens, and models that can be controlled by a special pen only.
Ink Aware is a feature of SMART Notebook software that lets teachers write and draw directly into an active file for programs that have Ink Aware capabilities. Notes and drawings made in Ink Aware programs can be saved to the file. Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel and Microsoft PowerPoint are the most commonly used Ink Aware software programs.
The Ink Layer in SMART Notebook Software is the layer on which digital ink is drawn when a teacher draws on the SMART Board screen surface with a pen from the SMART Pen tray.
Installing a SMART Board

Integrated SMART Board system
An integrated SMART Board system consists of a SMART Board interactive whiteboard and a built in short throw projector which is mounted directly above the Smartboard. The 600i series of SMART Boards is an example of an integrated Smartboard.
SMART Notebook Software lets teachers create interactive and engaging lessons by embedding media and manipulative resources from external sources or from the SMART Gallery into their Notebook file.

An interactive whiteboard is a touch sensitive screen that is connected to a computer and a multimedia LCD or DLP projector. The projector displays the image from the computer screen on to the interactive whiteboard screen surface. A teacher can control the computer by touching the interactive whiteboard surface with a finger or a pen in the same way that they might control the computer with a mouse. A teacher can press the Keyboard Tool button on the SMART Pen Tray to bring up the SMART On-Screen Keyboard. This tool lets the teacher input text, numbers and symbols, for example when typing in a website address.
Languages in SMART Notebook Software
SMART Notebook software is available in over forty different languages including English, German, French and Spanish.
Left clicking on the SMART Board
A left click on the computer connected to the SMART Board interactive whiteboard is initiated by tapping on the SMART Board interactive whiteboard screen surface.
Long throw projectors
Long throw projectors are used with SMART Board interactive whiteboards that are not projector integrated interactive whiteboard solutions. These types of LCD or DLP projectors must be positioned at certain distance from the Smartboard screen surface – usually a distance of one and a half times the width of the SMART interactive whiteboard screen.
Magic pen tool
The SMART Notebook Software Magic Pen tool is multi purpose tool that allows a teacher to write notes on their Smartboard that disappear after a short time. Teachers can also use the Magic pen tool to zoom in on certain areas of the SMART Notebook page or add a spotlight to an object by drawing a circle around it.
In terms of the market share of interactive whiteboards, SMART Technologies is currently the market leader with a market share of 52.8 percent calculated in the second quarter of 2009.
Mathematical notation on a SMART Board
Teachers are able to input text in subscript or superscript form in SMART Notebook Software.
Microphones and SMART Boards
Microphones can be used as part of a SMART Board classroom amplification system to boost a teacher’s voice, enabling them to make sure all students can hear what is being discussed in the classroom.
Mimio interactive whiteboards
Mimio is an interactive whiteboard manufacturer that uses a Mimio Bar and Mimio Interactive Stylus to convert a standard classroom whiteboard into an interactive whiteboard system.
Mobile floor stand for SMART Boards
SMART Board interactive whiteboards can be mounted on mobile floor stands so that they can be shared between classrooms. This is perfect for schools that have less than one interactive whiteboard per classroom.

Polyvision interactive whiteboards use a Bluetooth stylus in order to function, and can used with any DLP or LCD projector. These interactive whiteboards can also incorporate magnets.

Pressing on the SMART Board
When drawing on the Smartboard interactive whiteboard with a SMART pen tool, teachers should press firmly on the SMART Board surface, possibly somewhat harder than would normally be the case with a regular whiteboard surface.

The Properties Tab in SMART Notebook Software can be used to quickly manipulate an object to change its fill color, animation properties and line style.
Projector glare can be a problem for teachers using SMART Boards which do not have integrated short throw projectors.

Promethean interactive whiteboards
Interactive whiteboards made by Promethean use electromagnetic resonance technology to create an interactive touch screen surface. Interactive whiteboards from Promethean are called ActivBoards.
The SMART Recorder tool in SMART Notebook Software allows teachers to record their own video files with sound by capturing events that take place on the Smartboard screen.
Resistive technology in SMART Boards
SMART Boards use resistive technology in order to be used as large touch screen devices. Resistive technology uses two conductive layers (in this case on the back board of the SMART Board and on the back of the SMART Board screen surface) with a gap in between them which, when closed, registers a contact point which is translated into coordinates on the computer screen by special software.
Right clicking on the SMART Board
Right clicking on the SMART Board is possible by pressing the Right Click button on the SMART Pen tray and then pressing the SMART Board screen surface.
Save class notes
Teachers can save notes that have been made on the SMART Board interactive whiteboard to a file which can then be sent to the class via email or printed out as handouts.
Scientific symbols on a SMART Board
Teachers can input a variety of scientific and mathematical symbols on their SMART Board interactive whiteboard using SMART Notebook Software.
Screen capture tool
The Screen capture tool in SMART Notebook Software allows a teacher to capture an area of the screen as an image file by clicking and dragging the mouse curser around the area to be captured. This image can then be used in other Notebook lesson files.
Screen shade tool
The SMART Screen Shade tool in Notebook Software is a virtual shade or cover that lets a teacher using a SMART Board cover up certain parts of the information on the Smartboard and then reveals this information part by part to students.

Shape recognition tool
The Shape recognition tool in Notebook Software lets a teacher draw a shape on the Smartboard interactive whiteboard which is then automatically converted into a shape that is geometrically perfect.
Short throw projector
Short throw projectors are projectors that can project an image from a short distance away from the screen. These types of projectors are used with projector integrated SMART Boards such as the SMART Board 600i series.

SMART Audio is a classroom audio enhancement system from SMART Technologies which consists of two wireless microphones, an infra red sensor, a receiver and four speakers.

SMART Board 600i Generation 4
The fourth generation of 600i integrated SMART Board interactive whiteboards contain an ultra short throw projector which can produce images on the SMART Board screen from an extremely short distance away. SMART Board eraser
The SMART Board eraser is found in the SMART Pen tray along with the SMART Pen tools. This tool allows teachers to erase digital ink from the SMART Board surface just as they would erase dry erase marker on a regular whiteboard.
SMART Board for Flat Panel Displays
The SMART Board for Flat Panel Displays is an interactive whiteboard solution that uses an existing flat panel display as an interactive whiteboard by using Digital Vision Touch Technology and a glass overlay. Click here for more information on the SMART Board for Flat Panel Displays.
SMART Board icon
The SMART Board icon appears in the Windows system tray or Mac OSX dock when SMART Notebook Software is running on the PC or Macintosh computer.
SMART Board surface
The surface of the SMART Board is the tough plastic sheet that teachers use to write on in digital ink or control computer applications with their finger.
SMART Board tools
The SMART Board tools menu gives a teacher easy access to a variety of commonly used functions on a SMART Board interactive whiteboard. As well as basic functions such as the On-Screen Keyboard and Floating Tools menu, the SMART Board tools menu also gives teachers quick access to a variety of multimedia tools which are used in creating and present dynamic content to students.
SMART Display Frame
The SMART Display Frame is a frame containing special cameras which allows a flat panel LCD or plasma display to be used as an interactive whiteboard solution. Click here for more details on the SMART Display Frame.
SMART Document Camera
The SMART Document Camera is a document camera or visualizer from SMART Technologies which is integrated with SMART Notebook Software. The SMART Document Camera allows teachers to display pages from text books, 3D images or even images from a microscope directly into a Notebook Software file which can then be annotated over.
SMART Board interactive whiteboard
SMART Boards are interactive whiteboards made by the company SMART Technologies, which is the market leader in interactive whiteboard technology products. SMART Notebook drawing tools are interactive drawing tools that allow a teacher to quickly and easily produce shapes, lines and arrows and a variety of different pen and brush styles on their SMART Board interactive whiteboard.

SMART Notebook Software is the powerful and easy to use interactive whiteboard software package from SMART Technologies that lets teachers create dynamic, interactive lessons which can be presented on a SMART Board interactive whiteboard. SMART Notebook Welcome Center
The SMART Welcome Center loads when SMART Notebook Software is opened. This feature gives teachers an easy first point of access for finding SMART lesson creation resources and training tips for their SMART Board interactive whiteboard.

SMART Pen tray
The SMART Board pen tray sits directly below the Smartboard writing surface. When a teacher or student selects a particular Smart pen tool or eraser from the SMART pen tray, the pen tray uses special sensors to automatically detect which tool has been picked up and switches mode accordingly. Quick access buttons on the SMART pen tray allow a teacher to quickly bring up the on screen SMART keyboard and also the right click and help functions.
SMART Pen tool
Each Smartboard interactive whiteboard comes with four SMART pen tools and a SMARTBoard eraser. The SMART pen tools come in red, blue, black and green colors and can be used by the teacher or students to draw digital ink on the SMART Board in each of these colors. The Smartboard eraser can be used to erase this digital ink from the Smartboard.
SMART Response CE

SMART Response LE

The table drawing tool in SMART Notebook Software allows teachers to easily create tables on their SMART Board interactive whiteboard.
A tablet computer is a portable, wireless computer which could be used in conjunction with a SMART Board interactive whiteboard.
Themed Notebook pages
Themes in SMART Notebook Software allow teachers to create Notebook pages in a consistent theme using specific fonts, colors and images.
Timed saves function
SMART Notebook Software can be set up to automatically save content at designated time periods in order to prevent teachers from losing work.
Touch recognition technology
Touch recognition technology is a new feature from SMART Technologies available with certain models of SMART Board interactive whiteboard. This feature means that when a teacher touches the SMART Board, it will recognize the way in which the teacher is touching it and switch modes accordingly.
Touch sensitive screen
The surface of the SMART Board interactive whiteboard is touch sensitive, which means that teachers can simply the touch the SMART Board surface to write on it in digital ink or control computer applications.
Training for SMART Boards
Training for SMART Board interactive whiteboards is available online from the Blossom Learning SMART Board training course.
The Transparency Layer in SMART Notebook Software appears when a teacher takes a SMART Pen tool out of the SMART Pen tray. The Transparency Layer appears as a border around the desktop and the SMART Floating Tools toolbar is also launched.
Ultra short throw projector
Ultra short throw projectors are special types of short throw projectors which have a special lens that is able to project an image on to a SMART interactive whiteboard screen from an extremely short distance away – as little as three inches from the interactive whiteboard screen surface. These types of short throw projectors are able to almost completely eliminate shadowing on the SMART Board screen surface and glare from the projector lamp.
A SMART Board interactive whiteboard can be connected to a computer via a USB cable.
USB speakers for SMART Boards
Optional USB Speakers are available for SMART Board interactive whiteboards which can be mounted to the Smartboard or on the wall. These speakers are supplied with a volume control button and a USB hub with two USB ports.
Unifi 35 projector
The Unifi 35 projector is a short throw projector that comes with the first generation of SMART Board interactive whiteboard in the 680i series.
Unifi 45 projector
The Unifi 45 projector is a short throw projector that comes with the second generation of SMART Board interactive whiteboard in the 680i series.
Unifi 55 projector
The Unifi 55 projector is a short throw projector that comes with the third generation of SMART Board interactive whiteboard in the 680i series.
An integrated ultra short throw UX60 projector comes with the fourth generation of 680i series SMART Board interactive whiteboards. A VGA connection is used to connect the computer in a SMART Board interactive whiteboard system to the multimedia projector.
Video files can be played on a SMART Board interactive whiteboard, with sound if a classroom audio enhancement system is present.
The SMART video player in Notebook Software lets teachers play video files embedded in their SMART Notebook lessons. These videos can be resized easily if needed. Teachers can annotate over these video files in digital ink on the SMART Board.

If the computer attached to the SMART Board has an internet connection, the SMART Board can be used to browse websites using touch control to access the features of the internet browser.
